Should You Do NaNoWriMo?

NaNoWriMo is where “I’ve always wanted to write” becomes “I am a writer.” – Willow Sanders, NaNoWriMo participate

NaNoWriMo is just around the corner and lots of writers are getting ready to do it.

NaNoWriMo is the abbreviated version of National Novel Writing Month. It takes place every November and writers try to write a fifty-thousand word novel in thirty days.

It is actually quite enjoyable to do, and I have done it four times now. So, today I want to talk about if you should do NaNoWriMo, and actually if I should do it as well.

Do you have the inclination?

Do you want to spend the time to write a novel? Do you have an idea that you are excited about and want to write?

Because if you don’t want to write, at this point it really doesn’t make sense for you to try doing NaNoWriMo because if you are going to do it, it is very important to have the inclination to do it. Otherwise it would probably just be torture (although I don’t actually know that because I have always wanted to do it.

Do you have time? Or if you don’t currently have the time can you make the time?

To get the fifty thousand words in a month you have to write 1,667 words a day and that is probably about an hour a day for most people. So if you don’t have time to do this, it is probably better not to.

You can always use whatever free time you have to write, but if you don’t have enough free time to do that, it may be better just to wait for another year, or do it in April or July where you have more freedom in choosing how much you are going to write.

Are you ready to face the stress of trying to write 50,000 words in a month?

Because it is stressful. Unless you normally write this much a day, it is a lot of writing to try and do in a month. It means spending the time and much of your mental energy on one thing. And just trying to write a novel on top of the rest of your life is a lot of work.

Do you have something that you want to write about?

If you don’t have any inspiration trying to write a novel seems sort of pointless to me, but if you want to be a pantser and start figuring out what you are writing on day one.

Are you ready to lose your social life for a month?

That tends to have to be skipped when you are trying to write a novel in a month.

So, hopefully these questions will give you an idea of if you should do NaNoWriMo this November!

I am planning on not doing NaNoWriMo this year because I really don’t have time. Are you planning on doing NaNoWriMo this year? Have you done it before or will it be your first?
