Book Review: The Red Fox Clan

Actually ‘hiding place’ was something of an overstatement for Maddie’s position. She was simply lying prone, covered head to toe by her cloak, among knee-high, dried stalks of grass. – The Red Fox Clan

I have enjoyed a lot of John Flanagan’s books, so when I found out that a new one had come out I was fairly excited.

Actually, I kind of stopped reading his books for a while, so it wasn’t until a few weeks ago that I realized that ‘The Red Fox Clan’ had come out, but as soon as I did realize this I decided to read it.

Of course, by this point it had been out for just over a year.

But better late than never. . .

Anyways, I will be doing my best to keep this review spoiler free. Hopefully, you will not be able to learn more about the plot than you would from reading the blurb.

Book name: The Red Fox Clan

Author: John Flanagan

Pages: 346

Genre: Fantasy

Maddie has just passed her third-year assessment in her training as a Ranger, an elite band of archers and strategist. Now though she has an even more difficult challenge ahead of her as she returns for a visit at home and has to play at being a normal princess. However, there is more secrets and danger at the castle than she first suspected. A mysterious new danger is rising in the kingdom. As Maddie learns the secrets in the castle, the danger draws ever nearer. . .

One thing that I always enjoy about John Flanagan’s writing is his dialog, and this book did not end up disappointing in that respect. Although, there was not as much conversation in this book as there was in some of his others which was a bit of a disappointment.

The heroine Maddie is not a character that I can like. She ends up coming off to me as rather whiny and self-centered which is not something that I like in a character, however she does her moments of heroism.

The plot felt a bit simple to me, but I am one who tends to like there to be several subplots.

Most of the time the story had a good pace and was able to keep me turning the pages. However, I did almost stop reading this book because of the beginning, of course, I did have a lot of expectations riding on it since I have read other books in this series. This was a book that I had a difficult time starting, but once I did get into I enjoyed it.

This was a book that I enjoyed reading once, but I do not feel like it is one that I will be reading again. Although, when the next book in the series comes out I am planning to read it.

Hopefully, this has given you a bit of a better idea about this book.

Have you read ‘The Red Fox Clan’? If you have what did you think of it? And if you have not read this book is it one that you would consider reading now?
