5 Things I Hate In Books

There is no friend as loyal as a book. – Ernest Hemingway

Two weeks ago I posted 10 Things I Love in Books, today I would like to talk about five things I don’t like in books.

This is my personal opinions more than anything else and some of them are rather random, so feel free to disagree.

Also, I just want to make it clear that I have still enjoyed books where some of these things have happened, I just don’t like these things personally. Although some of them are things that most people don’t like.

So in no particular order here are some things that I love in books.

Boring Characters or Characters I Can’t Relate To

From experience I have found that this is what is one of the most likely things to stop me from finishing a book. If the characters are interesting I’ve been able to read things with not great plots, but even if the plots are great it is hard to read books that don’t have good characters.

All of the Characters Being Dishonorable

I’m fine with some of the characters being dishonorable, but when all, or even a lot of the characters are being dishonorable, it get old. By the way, when I say dishonorable I basically mean morally grey and/or betraying everyone.

White Mice

White mice themselves are not bad, the thing is that if they show up in a story they are almost always bad. I just wish that if an author has to have some kind of animal controlling the world it did not almost always have to be white mice.

Over Explaining Things

I hate the feeling that I get when the author is over explaining things. I know that it may not always be on purpose, but still it seems as though the author thinks that the readers are not smart or something. Readers can figure things out for themselves.

Things Happening That Never Make Sense

This last one is when you read the entire book or even the entire series, and there is still something that makes absolutely no sense however long you think about it. When this happens it  is just disappointing the author has worked hard on this series and then he or she fails in this one area.

So those are somethings that I really don’t like in books. I hope that you have found this interesting. What are some things that you hate in books?

  1. I don’t necessarily hate it — but I just tend to not enjoy excruciatingly slow paces.
When a writer takes forever to make a point or repeats the same point — more or less — instead of moving on.
These are just a few things I don’t particularly enjoy.
